Professional Football Player, Victim of Crime. For three seasons (1974 until his death), he played at the defensive-end position in the National Football League with the San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles. He attended H.B. Sugg High School (North Carolina) and played collegiate football at Fayetteville State University in North Carolina, prior to being selected by the Oakland Raiders as the first overall pick of the 1973 NFL Supplemental Draft. He caught on with the Chargers and in 1975, he secured a starter spot with the Eagles after impressing coach Mike McCormack and later Dick Vermeil. Over the next two seasons (1975 to 1976), he appeared in 28 consecutive games. On December 19th, 1976, Gay was stabbed in the neck by his wife Roxanne as he slept in the couples' South New Jersey apartment. He was able to get out a phone call to emergency personnel, however he succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital. Gay's death was reported in newspapers all over the country and his murder sent shock-waves throughout the National Football League. His body was taken back to his native North Carolina for burial. Roxanne's defense stood on her claim that she was physically abused during their three-year marriage and she was forced to kill him. However, when it became apparent she had been suffering from paranoia, she was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to the Trenton State Psychiatric Hospital in 1977.
